SPC’s 2nd High Table Dinner of 2016-17 : A Dinner of “Self-Eating
SPC’s second High Table Dinner (HTD) of 2016-17 academic year was held on Nov. 29, with almost 200 students, College Fellows and Affiliates joining to listen to a talk on “Autophagy Research: Reasons for Winning the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.”
Professor Jiahong LU, SPC’s College Affiliate and also Assistant Professor from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS), was invited to explain what autophagy research is about, and under what circumstances such phenomenon was discovered by Japanese scientist Professor Yoshinori Ohsumi.
Autophagy, literally means “self-eating,” is a cellular degradation process in human brain. Ohsumi was the first scientist to discover that the autophagy mechanism can be triggered by starvation, which results in non-essential cellular components degrading for healthier cells to survive. As starvation induces autophagy to promote survival, Prof. LU drew an analogy to challenge students to “stay hungry” so as to overcome adversities.
Prof. LU, who specializes neurobiology, cell biology and Pharmacology, met Ohsumi 3 years ago when both attended a conference in Europe. LU quoted Ohsumi’s advice, encouraging SPC students to explore uncharted fields in scientific research.
The HTD evening, attended by 66 freshmen, 76 sophomores, 4 College Fellows and 4 Affiliates, was started with the college tradition of bell ringing by Master Leung, followed by College Choir’s anthem singing, and farewell bidding for graduating students and exchange students who would leave SPC at the end of the fall semester.

紹邦書院2016-17學年第二次高桌晚宴于11月29日舉行，共有近200名學生參與，在紹邦書院服務的導師們也受邀前來，并聽取了名為“‘自噬研究’獲頒2016年諾貝爾醫學獎的因素簡釋”的精彩演講。
紹邦書院的院外導師暨澳門大學中華醫藥研究院助理教授路嘉宏博士在演講中介紹了何為“自噬研究”，以及日本科學家大隅良典教授在何種情況下發現了細胞自噬的關鍵機制。
自噬，也即“吞食自己”，是一種可見於人類大腦細胞的降解機制。大隅良典教授首先發現，自噬機制可被飢餓觸發，從而降解細胞內不必要的成分，為細胞的健康和生存提供能量。路嘉宏教授在演講中借這一機制做了個比喻，提醒同學們要“保持飢餓”，從而更好地面對挑戰。
從事神經生物學、細胞生物學和藥理學研究的路嘉宏教授曾于3年前在歐洲的某次學術會議上遇到大隅良典教授。他借鑒大隅良典教授的建議，鼓勵同學們在研究中勇於開拓未知領域。
當天的晚宴有66名新生、76名二年級學生、4位書院導師和4位院外導師參加。晚宴遵照傳統，以梁偉賢院長的敲鐘和致辭作為開端，然後是合唱團帶領大家齊唱院歌。梁院長還代表紹邦書院向即將離開書院的畢業生和交換生表示歡送的祝福。
