2017 SPC’s “Passing on the Spirit of Love” Charity Sale

On March 2 and 3, SPC held a “Passing on the Spirit of Love” charity sale, which aimed at raising funds to help poor students at Shanxi Bo Ai School and the needy villagers living nearby. Shanxi Bo Ai School is a non-government school located at Qin Yuan County, Tai Yuan City, Shanxi Province of China, supported by SPC’s service learning program for the past two years. The first charity sale was organized last April before a group of SPCers organized a voluntary teaching service learning trip to Bo Ai School last May-June.

A total of 22 SPCers from the voluntary teaching team, friends and supporters of the College, plus 50-plus volunteers from different student organizations at SPC took part in preparing for this charity sale of handcrafts and food, all self-made by students, such as chocolate pudding in pots, iced pomelo tea, cupcakes, “deviled eggs”, curry fish cakes and handmade key chains. Students from different floors in SPC also provided their helping hand, making matcha (green tea), mocha (rice cake) and hand-made chocolate for the charity sale.

Even though the charity sale lasted for only two days, it gained strong support from 15-plus non-resident college fellows, college affiliates and senior management personnel. Many students also showed support by buying the sale products, which were all sold out before the end of the day on March 3, raising MOP45,940 for the poor children at Bo Ai School. Shanxi Bo Ai School’s Superintendent Mrs. Christine Chan and her husband Dr. Patrick Chan also came to SPC to show support. They expressed their deeply felt gratitude to the continuous support of SPC and the efforts made by the SPC students.

The charity sale ended in the late afternoon of March 3. Yet the participating students’ realization of making long lasting impact by a small act of charity lingers on. Students at the charity sale site said that they would continue to support this activity, through which they learn how to give, how to serve, how to share and how to love.
