Introducing Interventions to Bridge Academic Achievement Gap

Elementary school teacher Amy Wong, with over 20 years of teaching experience in the United States, was invited to share her professional expertise in the Master Tea gathering held on November 15. A total of 17 SPCers from the Faculty of Education came to learn from the speaker on the topic of “Introducing Intervention to Cut Academic Achievement Gap”.
In the past 20 plus years, Mrs. Wong has been teaching students from low income families, mostly African American families with divorce history, in the public elementary school.
Mrs. Wong first introduced how the public school system for low income family in United States works and what a teacher should be mindful of in providing assistance to underprivileged students. Then she brought participants’ attention to the essential skills of bridging the academic gap. She pointed out that being empathic and caring for students is more important than passing on to them knowledge.
On academic subject teaching, she introduced various techniques and approaches of teaching English reading and mathematics. Lastly, Mrs. Wong explained the importance of being specific in motivating, reminding and instructing students to behave properly. Participating students indicated that they learned a lot from this talk.
